All my life, I have loved the arts.
Whether it be film, theatre or other cultural works of art, I have always been fascinated by and obsessed with the ways in which we are able to use art to express ourselves and our humanity. This is why I am very excited to announce that for the Social Media Journalism course that I am currently taking at Ithaca College, I will primarily be covering stories within the beat of art and culture within Tompkins County.
Tompkins County is rich with culture and events that bring communities of all types together. Whether it be the legendary Apple Harvest Festival, incredible art crawls, live performances at the State Theatre or one of Tompkins’ incredible theatre groups, there is always something culturally creative happening in Tompkins.
One of my biggest passions is discussing and writing about film. I consider myself extremely lucky to be going to school in the very place where the film industry had its big break. The city of Ithaca was once the unofficial capital of the silent film industry and the launch point of the industry itself before it moved to Hollywood. I look forward to exploring ideas for stories that dive into this rich history while also looking into the latest developments and events taking place at Ithaca landmark Cinemapolis.
I also look forward to getting in contact with many of Tompkins County’s local live theatres like the Hangar Theatre, which I had been in contact with for a story that I wrote during my freshman year of school. This story focused on the impact that the pandemic has had on the widespread theatre industry. It would be extremely interesting to do a follow-up story related to how theatres were able to triumph and continue on as the industry continues to return to what it was before the pandemic.
There are so many amazing opportunities to explore within my chosen beat. I look forward to taking my audience along with me every step of the way of this fulfilling cultural journey that I am about to embark on.
