A Reflection on the Past and a Look Towards the Future

Over the course of this semester, I’ve had the opportunity to report on stories that I’m passionate about in the social media journalism class that I’ve been taking at Ithaca College. Every story that I’ve reported on has been related to cultural events and opportunities in Ithaca.

I’ve reported on film and comedy festivals, as well as Ithaca’s local film history. My favorite part about the stories that I’ve pursued is that I’ve been able to connect with each of them personally due to how their topics have each affected me in my life.

I have found it very difficult to choose a favorite story that I’ve worked on so far. However, if I had to choose, I would likely have to say “Lights, camera … and the rest is history.” I have been obsessed with all aspects of film, including film history, for as long as I can remember. Having the opportunity to develop a story about the history of film in one of the places where the film industry had its early beginnings was completely a dream come true for me. Not only did I learn a lot during this story, but I gained a new perspective on film as an artistic medium. I will likely take what I experienced with this story with me throughout my professional career.

In reflecting on the past, I would be remiss to provide a sneak preview of what the future holds for my final story of the semester.

The Ithaca Night Bazaar is a local indie music festival that aims to provide the citizens of Ithaca with a night full of music, diverse food, drinks and culture. The event typically takes place once a month only during the summer season. However, this December, there will be a special one-night holiday event that will be unlike the events typically hosted in the summer.

In my final story, I aim to provide people with information on what they might be able to expect from the holiday event. I will also aim to answer the question that is why are they hosting a holiday event in December when typically their events only take place during the summer? To answer these questions, I plan to speak with the coordinators of the event, as well as some of the people who plan to participate in it, whether they be musicians or local vendors. I see this story as an exciting opportunity to shine a spotlight on this event, which I believe could be special for people in Ithaca.

Have you attended the Ithaca Night Bazaar in the past? What is your favorite thing to do to get into the holiday spirit?
